The FERIA Series of Conferences

The FERIA Series of Conferences has its roots in the Forum’s first UK National Meeting, which was held at Loughborough University in 1996. Since then, this Conference, which later became known as ECCRIA grown into a well-established biennial conference with an international attendance, which has been held at the University of Nottingham, (1998), Aston University, (2000), Imperial College London, (2002), the University of Edinburgh, (2004), the University of Kent, (2006), Cardiff University, (2008), the University of Leeds, (2010), the University of Nottingham, (2012), the University of Hull, (2014), the University of Sheffield, (2016), and Cardiff University, (2018). ). The Programme, Presentations and other information from the 12th ECCRIA Conference held at Cardiff University can be found here.

As a result of the change of name and remit of the Forum to the Fuel and Energy Research Forum in 2017, the decision has been taken to change the name of this series of Conferences to FERIA, where the first in this series was “The 1st FERIA Conference, the European Conference on Fuel and Energy Research and Its Applications, the Successor to the ECCRIA Series of Conferences”, held at the University of Nottingham.

The 1st FERIA Conference was held on 6th to 8th September 2021 at the University of Nottingham. All aspects of fuel and energy utilisation research currently being carried out in the UK were covered by this Conference, where this Conference also incorporated the 2nd Clean Energy Science Lecture. The Programme, Presentations and other information from the 1st FERIA Conference can be found here.   However, unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, a number of overseas participants were unable to attend, thus reducing the usual attendance. There were just under 100 participants withsome from overseas representing 7 countries, (Belgium, China, France,Germany, Italy, Norway, and Russia). The conference had 88 oral presentations, presented in parallel sessions, as well as almost 20 poster presentations.

The 2nd FERIA Conference was held on 4th to 6th September 2023 at the University of Sheffield. As a direct result of the remit for this Conference being expanded to cover biomass and waste as well as other fossil fuels, (as was the 1st FERIA Conference), this Conference was one of the most successful in this series of FERIA and ECCRIA Conferences. There were more abstracts submitted than any previous Conference, (from the UK and 9 overseas counties), leading to 9 conference sessions, 8 of which were triple sessions. This Conference attracted more sponsorship than for any of theprevious FERIA and ECCRIA Conferences. Most aspects of fuel and energy utilisation research currently being carried out in the UK were covered by this Conference, where it attracted participants from several of the major UK organisations carrying out fuel and energy R&D, as well as participants from overseas. The Conference was attended by just under 140 participants, where almost a fifth of the registered participants were from overseas representing 9 countries, (Denmark, Ukraine, Estonia, China, Vietnam, Korea, the United Arab Emigres, South Africa, and Nigeria). The conferencereceived for consideration over 130 abstracts and had over 100 oral presentations, as well as 17 poster presentations. Over 50 PhD students attended the Conference. The Conference also incorporated the 4th CleanEnergy Science Lecture. The Programme, Presentations and other information from the 2nd FERIA Conference can be found here.

The 3rd FERIA Conference, the European Conference on Fuel and EnergyResearch and Its Applications, will to take place at the Michael Sadler Building, University of Leeds on Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th September 2025. The Conference Announcement and Call for Abstracts can be found here and more information on this event can be found here.
